A kinder, gentler winter down South

Spend a week in the beachside towns of Garden City / Murrells Inlet just south of Myrtle Beach

Write with no interruptions

Share a beach-overlook or beach-front five-bedroom home with other writers dedicated to getting work done. Arrive on a Sunday, depart on a Saturday, and don’t worry about Uber or taxis — airport pickup and dropoff (at the Myrtle Beach International Airport) is included. After you arrive, you’ll be driven to a nearby grocery store to buy what you’ll eat for the week, and you’ll prepare your own meals in a kitchen fully stocked with appliances and cookware. Each bedroom has its own private bathroom (Overlook House is in the hallway, Beachfront House is ensuite) and there’s a washer and dryer. In both houses, once you walk out the front door you’re seconds from the beach.

I have to move houses because I couldn’t get the one I rented last year during the month of March. So March is a new house with a heated pool. If you’re curious about what winter is like down in the Myrtle Beach area, I’ve posted hundreds of photos on Facebook over January and February 2022.

Garden City is known as The Family Beach, and Murrells Inlet is the Seafood Capital of South Carolina. Both houses are on a long spit of land that’s essentially a sandbar: one side is the ocean, the other side is a tidal marsh. It’s beautiful and quiet in the off season.

Two houses, two types of retreats

The Overlook House (January-February, Garden City) is across the street from the beach and overlooks the ocean. A two-story newer Colonial, all bedrooms ($750/week) will be on the second floor. Bathrooms are located in the hallway, but one will be dedicated to your use. The main floor — kitchen, dining room with two dining tables, living room — has a full-span front porch and a screened side porch. High ceilings add to the spacious feel. Outside, there’s a new wooden side deck and a hot tub with two outdoor showers. This house is located .3 miles from the Garden City Pier, a good destination for a morning walk. Garden City’s ‘downtown’ includes a decent restaurant/bar — the Causeway Grill — and an Arcade with lots of retro video games and Skeeball for the kid in you.
ONLY TWO BEDROOMS WILL BE RENTED PER WEEK.
This is a QUIET RETREAT with quiet hours — I’ll be working on a book manuscript due at the end of February; so this is for writers who want a focused week of intensive work. While we can eat dinner together and chat in the evenings, daytimes are work hours with minimal conversation.

The Beachfront House (March, Murrells Inlet) is an older ranch home with bedrooms off the living room/main area. Bathrooms are ensuite. Two bedrooms are streetside ($850/week), and one bedroom is oceanside ($950/week). The house fronts the ocean but sits behind a wide area of grassy dunes. There’s a full-span covered back porch, smaller open front porch, heated pool and private boardwalk to the beach. This is further down the beach: the Garden City Pier is 1.5 miles north.
THREE BEDROOMS WILL BE RENTED PER WEEK.
This is a more SOCIAL RETREAT and will include 2-3 outings during the week to Brookgreen Gardens (a world-renowned sculpture garden), the Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk & Restaurant Row (great early bird/happy hour dinner prices), and at least one dinner out as a group.

While you won’t see snow, it’s not Florida. Expect Jan/Feb daytime temperatures in the high 50s (possibly as low as 40), with March averaging in the 60s.
